All nonprofits have the legal right to ask for money. Not all of them have Asking Rights™.

This was the first 'key concept' outlined in the book Asking Rights:  Why Some Nonprofits Get Funded (and some don't). It sprang from an ill-fated yet stubbornly persuasive notion that I saw repeated throughout the nonprofit industry: "People will give money to my organization because it's doing good things."

Having raised money for all shapes and sizes of nonprofits over the past 24+ years, I tell you --empathetically-- that the above notion is not only untrue, it is a harmful construct that stands in the way of an organization reaching its mission-critical potential. When a nonprofit board and staff truly understand how to earn the right to ask for money --when people take the time to embrace the specific steps that lead to sustainable funding success-- the organization's ability to do "good things" exponentially expands.
